January 30, 2026- Day #26

After 16 days in Brazilian ports and waters, this is our last day in this country. We have learned a lot and seen a lot of this huge country. Today we finish up in Rio Grande, Brazil. This is reported to be one of the oldest cities in Brazil and was the State Capital from 1835- 1845. It continues to be an important maritime port for the country. Originally the city was named Rio Grande de Sao Pedro and played a key in the defense against the French consairs.

We woke up to a local band playing music and dancers in traditional costumes on the pier outside of our balcony. What a welcome! There were also camera crews filming. We were told that they only get about three cruise ships in this port each year, and therefore, this was a special welcome for us. After breakfast we took a shuttle bus to the city square to walk around and explore the area. No official shore excursion scheduled in this port.

In the city square there were a number of vendors with trinkets, baskets, and other items for sale. We saw a couple of young people doing a dance, and I will try to upload the video, but not sure if you will be able to view it. I also have some pictures of another beautiful church, Cathedral of St. Peter. Then we walked through the Mercado Publico and went into several shops. It is amazing all the items, including kitchen appliances they had for sale on the street. Joan said she could not understand the clothes sizing, so no retail therapy for her today. Back on ship, I signed up for a mixology class to learn how to make, and of course sample, a traditional Brazilian cocktail, Caipirinha. I have the recipe, so something new for our Friday night cocktails group.
