Another day in Chile. Docked at the port city of Coquimbo and today we are taking a bus tour to the Elqui Valley for a pisco distillery tour and tasting. Joan has already decided that she likes pisco sours!
Pisco is made from the muscatel grapes, and starts off like the processing of wine. Next it is distilled and then aged in oak barrels from either the United States or France. We were warned to protect ourselves from the sun and heat. We were at the elevation that the sun was potent. In addition to wine and pisco, this area is known for gold and especially copper mining.
A stop at another artisan market, but no purchases today. It was a very quick stop due to the heat. The town square of Vicuna was also a very quick across the square walk and photo stop with a statue of Gabriela Mistral, a Nobel Prize in Literature winner. Since we did not have enough pisco tasting, we went to a restaurant for a pisco sour, empanadas, and papaya (which was very sweet and not like we can get in the States).
On ride home, some people slept off the pisco sours, but I got some good photos of the dam and reservoir. They are in a very severe drought and what the guide described reminded me of the Hoover Dam and Lake Meade situation.
