Have arrived in a new country this morning. Now in Punta Arenas, Chile overlooking the Strait of Magellan. Temperature today is 53 degrees F. We going out to walk through the town, but wearing a couple of layers and a stocking hat. This city had a lot of importance prior to the completion of the Panama Canal but still is the center of Chile’s wool trade. The Boundary Treaty of 1881 between Chile and Argentina recognized the Strait of Magellan as Chilean territory. (sounds like a good trivia question).
Punta Arenas is known for their giant sized King Crab plate. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to sample this local cuisine. While walking through town we found the following: Munoz Gamero Square with the Statue of Fernando Magellan (tale is that if you rub his big toe you will be coming back to the city), the Chilean version of the Squeeze Inn ( a hot dog stand in Sunbury PA for those of you from back east).
Hope you enjoyed the pictures from yesterday and a few more from today.
