I posted a couple a pictures but did not write anything about a museum I found just off the city square in Punta Arenas. The museum was to commemorate the Antarctic Treaty that was signed by 12 nations on December 1, 1959 and has been in force since 1961. This treaty designates the continent south of 60 degrees S latitude exclusively for peaceful scientific purposes. The treaty bans military activities, nuclear explosions and waste disposal. Although first signed by 12 countries, it is now recognized by 58 nations.
