February 9, 2026- Day#36

I

Hooray! This morning we are docked in Ushuaia, Argentina. This is touted as being the most southern city in the world. Of course we are in southern Patagonia, as I previously talked about. Joan and I are doing an excursion on a catamaran traveling up the Beagle Channel. Yes, I get the irony of getting off the ship after four days and getting on another boat, but this was not the plan when we scheduled this excursion several months ago.  Also, yes, this channel is named after the ship used by Darwin during his explorations.

You will see pictures today of the things we saw; Sea Les Eclaireus Lighthouse, cormorants, Sea Lion Island, and penguins. Yes, lots and lots of penguins. Later in the day, as we were leaving the port and going the opposite direction in Beagle Channel, we passed some beautiful glaciers (more pictures as I need to catch up from the past few days). As we went up and down the channel, Argentina was on one shore and Chile on the opposite shore.

The first Portuguese explorer in this area was Fernando Magellan in 1520. He spotted smoke and called it Tierra del Fuego, Land of Fire. This is where the national forest got its name. Although we are at the southern most city, we are still 1000 km ( 621 miles) from Antarctica. With that said, the temperature has really changed from when we were up in Brazil. The temperature today is about 40 degrees F.

Hope you enjoy these pictures. It was fun taking them.
